How to Tie a Necktie and a Bowtie

Alan David Custom Suits with simple step-by-step instructions to tying the perfect necktie.

(a) Windsor

1. Drape the tie on the back of your neck with the wide end of the tie on your right hand side. The wide end should hang about a foot below the narrow end.
2. Cross the wide end of the tie on top of the narrow end and lead it out through the loop that’s formed between your neck and the shirt collar.
3. Bring the wide end back to the right, and cross it below the narrow end so that the tag of the tie is facing outward.
4. Bring the wide end of the tie across and over the narrow end from left to right.
5. Pull the wide end through the loop.
6. Insert the wide end of the tie into the knot that’s formed in the loop, and string it through.
7. Tighten the knot until it fits firmly around your collar.

(b) Half Windsor

1. Drape the tie on the back of your neck with the wide end of the tie on your right hand side. The wide end should hang about a foot below the narrow end.
2. Cross the wide end of the tie on top of the narrow end, and wrap it around the narrow end, extending the wide end back to the right so that the tie’s tag is facing outward.
3. Bring the wide end up and insert it into the loop.
4. Wrap the wide end of the tie back to the left, crossing it over the narrow end.
5. Bring the wide end of the tie up through the loop, and insert it through the knot.
6. Tighten the knot until it fits firmly around your collar.

(c) Four in Hand

1. Drape the tie on the back of your neck with the wide end of the tie on your right hand side. The wide end should hang about a foot below the narrow end.
2. Cross the wide end of the tie on top of the narrow end, and wrap it around the narrow end, extending the wide back to the right so that the tie’s tag is facing outward.
3. Wrap the wide end of the tie around the narrow end for a second time, this time having the tie’s tag facing inward toward your shirt.
4. Bring the wide end of the tie up through the loop, and insert it through the knot.
5. Tighten the knot until it fits firmly around your collar.

(d) Bowtie

1. Drape the tie on the back of your neck with the right end of the tie hanging approximately an inch below the left end.
2. Cross the right end over the left end and bring it around through the collar loop.
3. Tighten the knot so that it is snug around your collar.
4. Take the left end of the tie and bundle it at the top of the color, forming the shape of the bowtie. Pass the right end over the left end.
5. Take both sides of the left end of the tie and bring them together so that they are folded into one another. Pass the right end through the small opening at the base of the collar.
6. Tighten the knot until it fits firmly around your collar.
