The History of Tailoring
Alan David Custom in New York is part of a long and rich history of custom tailored suits.
The Art of Tailoring Is Born
-
The word "tailor" dated back to 1297, originating from the Old French word taillour, or "cutter".
- Prior to the sewing machine technology that emerged in the 1830's (Elias Howe's sewing machine is pictured to the right), all garments were custom made, making tailors a very necessary part of the community.
Styles Throughout History
-
The Great Fire of London in 1665 sparked a need for simplified court dress to reflect the macabre mood of the time. Many costume historians conclude that the first three-piece suit was born.
- King George IV is regarded as the first of many trend-setter members of royalty. Amoung his fashion forward friends was George "Beau" Brummell, the lengendary mensware style icon. They helped fosture the "Regency Style" and Beau is credited for piecing together what is now considered the modern day suit with tie.
- Roman-style suits emphasize a close fit with a high waist and square shoulder, and is considered the "Power Look". Brioni helped popularize this style, thanks in part to Federico Fellini's 1960 film, "La Dolce Vita".
Modern Day Evolutions
-
The most signifigant change to tailor made garments have been in the fabric weight as well as necessary design and structure implements, such as linings and paddings.
- Renewed interst in bespoke fashion has tailors in high demand, creating custom pieces such as custom fitted suits, custom tailored shirts, and custom made suits.
