Questions and Answers
Why will your custom suit or shirt fit better at Alan David than in other stores?

At Alan David you have four generations worth of men’s custom clothing experience. A great custom garment is only as great as the person taking the initial measurements. With a unique set of 23 different measurements, Alan David and family has perfected the measuring process through the years. It takes years to learn how to measure and can only be perfected by the experience of doing, not watching or studying. Remember, once a garment is cut, if the fit is off, it is nearly impossible to alter it and still fit like a custom garment.

Why is the quality of our Custom suits better than other stores or other tailors custom suits?

All of our custom suits are made in a state of the art factory in nearby Canada. Our product rivals garments such as Brioni, Oxxford and the Savile Row tailors. We use all canvas and only the best interlings which protects our garments against the worst of the dry cleaners. Our advanced technology not only ensures the initial quality, but also the way it bounces back from the hardest of suit wearers. Gone quickly are those embarrassing creases in the crotch area. In addition, our patented lapel and chest canvases prevent bubbling and pilling even in the rain or snow. You will pay a little more for this, but your suit will rival those whose are considered the best in the world.

How long does it take to get my custom suit or custom shirt?

Our turn-around time for custom suits is the fastest in the industry. Your suit will arrive 12 days to 3 weeks from the time of your initial order. Delivery time depends on how complex a pattern we must create for you. If need be, our tailors can make your suit in our shop and can be finished in 7-9 days (emergencies only). Custom shirts arrive in two to three weeks. Rush orders on shirts ensure a 10 day delivery.

Once my suit comes in, how many fittings will I need?

Usually just one. Our initial measuring process is very complex and thorough. This enables the suit to arrive 85% complete. When the suit arrives you come try it on and our tailors finish off the bottoms and make sure that everything matches the initial measurements. Any discrepancies are corrected and the suit can be ready that day if needed (although we ask for a 5 day turnaround). If you are an existing client already, your suit should be ready for you to wear out upon arrival. 7 out of 10 existing clients’ garments are taken out without needing any further alterations. As a further accommodation, we ship UPS throughout the country (in a hanger pack box).

If I can’t make it to the showroom, can you come to me?

Alan David Custom sells 40% of its clientele at their offices or homes. We are available to measure you and have you select fabrics in your home or office, am or pm. We realize that time is money so we extend this service at no additional charge. We are available every day except Saturday. The buying process is exactly the same, only you are doing it at a place more convenient to you.

Are your suits really custom or just semi-custom?

All of our clothing is full blown custom. Every client receives an extensive measurement profile which starts with tape measures and ends with digital photographs linked to our graded graph to get the most precise measurements including posture, shoulder slope and seat circumference. These measurements are then e-mailed to our factory and within 48 hours a unique “pattern” is created to fit your body. No two patterns are alike.

Do I have to take off all my clothes to get measured?
No! Except for bulky shirts or trousers, no clothing needs to be removed.

How come your clothing is not made in Hong Kong?

Alan David Custom strives for quality and service more than anything else. Our product is regarded as one of the finest among industry experts. Hong Kong suits are inferior in construction and take 6-8 weeks to deliver. While they have made great strides, their quality is fair at best. Their garments often feel nice but the jackets usually pill and bubble, especially if you dry clean them. Being that our prices are only slightly higher than Hong Kong product, we do not believe that quality, turn-around time as well as service should be compromised. We live and work in New York and are always available for fittings, re-fittings etc. You never have to track us down in some hotel or suburb like the Hong Kong tailors.

I have never bought a custom suit before, will I be able to visualize it from a small swatch?

No problem at Alan David. We sell more custom suits out of one showroom than any other single store operation in the entire country. That means that we can show you many of the fabrics that other clients purchased made up as a full suit. We generally have about 100-150 custom suits hanging for clients to pick up, so you can see with your own eyes the fabric that you purchase. You can even try it on to see how the color looks on you. In addition, our sales force will guide you towards patterns that are proven winners. Our expertise might even lead you to choose a fabric you never would have considered beforehand, and you will be so pleasantly appreciative when the garment comes in with your overwhelming satisfaction.

If I buy my own fabric can you make the suit or shirt for me?

Yes. We do this quite often. The process is the same except the suit or shirt takes about one week extra to deliver because the fabric must be “sponged” and cleaned before being cut.

I have a suit that fits me perfectly. Can you copy the fit?

Absolutely. In addition to your own measurements we take several key measurements directly off the garment like shoulder point to point, half waist width, button height stance, shoulder slope, waist and seat and a few others. We also ask to borrow the garment for one week to send to our factory for further more complicated measurements. Your garment will take a few extra days to deliver but those of you who have that favorite fitting suit know that it is worth the wait.

Do working buttonholes or pick stiching cost extra?

No. All styling designs are included in the price of the garment (except vests and extra sets of trousers). Examples include functioning buttonholes, pick stiching, extra pockets, slanted pockets, double breasted, contrasting jacket linings, crotch linings, suspender buttons and more.

What if I gain or lose weight?

Alan David offers free alterations for the life of the suit. If you gain or lose a few ponds we will alter the garment for fee. That goes for any other alterations that might be needed down the road. Yes, the suit will still look custom. The most important part of a custom garment is the posture and shoulder measurements. You do not gain or lose weight in those areas.

What are the custom suit prices?
Suit prices start at $795 and go up to $1,495 depending on the quality of the fabric.
