At Alan David, we produce the finest hand made custom suits Manhattan has to offer. We never allow price to compromise quality. Yet our prices are quite affordable. Custom suit prices range from $850 to $1,595.

We are not the cheapest in town because we choose not to be. To be cheaper we would have to take something out of the “make” of the suit and/or use inferior fabrics. Sure, we can produce custom suits for less money. We can use fusing in the suits instead of canvas, but then the suits would eventually bubble or pucker. We can leave less fabric for “let out”, but then if you gain a few pounds you will need to buy a new suit. We can even show you a cheap fabric that looks and feels exactly like a quality fabric but after a few dry cleanings that custom made suit will “shine up”.

This brings us to the Hong Kong debate. We do not produce anything in Hong Kong because their suits are not true custom; they are “made to measure suits”. This means that instead of creating a unique pattern  for each client, the factory will use a stock size pre-existing pattern (like a stock size 42 regular) and then alter the garment where they can like sleeve length, waist size and inseam. Problems arise if a client has one shoulder lower than the other or if the client stoops or especially if the client is an athletic/muscular build with a large chest and slim waist. Hong Kong’s alterations can make the suit look better but it will never truly fit correctly, and certainly not fit as well as one of our New York custom suits

Another reason we do not use Hong Kong is “fit consistency”. A Hong Kong tailor takes your measurements and sends them to his factory. Depending on the factory’s workload at that time the custom suit will either be produced there or sub-contracted out to a second factory. Amazingly, about 25% of the time a third factory is called in because the workload is too full in the second factory.  That is why many times it takes so long to get suits from Hong Kong. Worse than that is if your custom tailored suits actually come in and fit correctly your follow up order is almost never made in the original factory causing the fit to be inconsistent.

We would rather sell a garment for an extra $100 but know that the garment will fit correctly and wear well with no bubbling, shining or pilling.
